Actually, what they're doing is pounding mochi, a type of sticky rice.

yeah, they're definitely making mochi. typicallt white but i guess they've added green tea powder or something else to change the color and slightly alter the taste.

We saw this type of mochi being prepared in this exact manner in Nara a couple years ago. Food is better once slammed by hammers.
